The Consulate General of Portugal in Maputo will no longer issue Schengen visas for Portuguese or other nationals of that common space who also have Mozambican nationality.
The change occurs on May 1, so the consulate warns of the need for holders of dual nationality to require a valid Portuguese passport – or a passport of another country in the Schengen area.
The change is based on “the regulation on the Visa Information System of the European Union and the exchange of data among the 26 member states,” the consulate said in a statement.
The regulation “prohibits the insertion of data concerning applicants who are holders of the nationality of a member state”, such as Portugal, who are required to circulate with their valid Schegen passport – ie Portuguese passport or another nationality covered .
“The same citizens must also be in possession, at the time of travel, of their valid Mozambican passport,” adds the consulate.
This requirement arises from the fact that, in both Mozambique and Portugal, the law establishes that a citizen with dual citizenship “can not invoke in his own national territory his other nationality”.
For information on procedures and issuance of documents, the Consulate General of Portugal in Maputo provides the electronic mail address’: [email protected]
“In cases where there is an urgent need to obtain the above mentioned documents, passport and citizen’s card, this consulate-general will give priority to attending the respective applicants, at their own request by email ‘,” adds the statement.
The visas affixed before the 30th of April “shall remain valid in the terms and time periods they were issued for”.
