The Constitutional Council validated and proclaimed the results of the January 24 Nampula mayoral by-election in Maputo on Tuesday. The announcement was made at a ceremony attended by political party leaders, observers and other electoral process stakeholders and presided over by Constitutional Council president, Hermenegildo Gamito.
Of the total of 73,852 votes (100 percent) cast, after the requalification of votes considered invalid, the results are as follows:
Of the 296,590 registered voters in Nampula municipality, only 73,852 voted, a participation ratio of only 24.9 percent.
Because none of the candidates reached the 50 percent required to win the election, a second round of voting will take place between the Frelimo and Renamo candidates, the top two.
The government has now 30 days to announce the date of the second round, on the recommendation of the National Elections Commission.
