The construction of the 70-kilometre Negomano-Roma road will start this year. The completion of this route is seen as strategic, as it is part of the project to consolidate the EN1National Highway, including the Mueda-Negomano section.
The Minister of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Celso Correia, said a few days ago in parliament that the government has signed a financing agreement with the African Development Bank for the works in question.
The minister pointed out, with reference to the ongoing construction of the Maputo-Catembe Bridge (S26) and Catembe-Ponta do Ouro (S27) and Belavista-Boane (S28) connecting roads, that the 115-kilometre Catembe-Ponta do Ouro section, previously a six-hour journey, could today be covered in just one hour, and the 63-kilometre Belavista-Boane section in just 45 minutes.
Minsiter Correia said that the Catembe-Ponta do Ouro and Belavista-Boane roads had required bridges over the rivers Maputo (S31), Fúti (S32), Mahubo (S33), Changalane (S34) and Tembe (S35), as well as crossings over the railway line in Mahubo (S36), Belavista (S37 and Salamanga (S38).
“These works will establish the link between National Road Number One at the southernmost end with Ponta do Ouro. Next, our ‘backbone and business card’ will become even more consolidated when we complete the Mueda-Negomano roadworks in Cabo Delgado, for which we are now celebrating the AfDB financing agreement,” Minister Correia said.
The minister also mentioned the asphalting works of the Mandlakazi-Nwadjahane-Macuácua road (S39), now in its final phase, 31 kilometres of the 35 that constitute the total extension having been paved.
These works are not only aimed at boosting tourism development in the region and reducing travel times, but also facilitating the link between Gaza and Inhambane provinces.
“Asphalting of the Homoíne-Panda road (S40) is also under way, as a complement to the already completed asphalting works on the Maxixe-Homoíne road (S41). Further north, asphalting of the Cuamba-Lichinga road (S42 / 43) is also taking place, divided into three lots: Cuamba-Muíta, Muíta-Massangulo and Massangulo-Lichinga in Niassa,” he said.
Celso Correia also pointed out that the asphalting of a 74-kilometres stretch of the Nampula-Nametil road (44) in Nampula was also under way.
In Cabo Delgado, a new contractor has started asphalting 135 kilometres of the Montepuez-Ruaça road (S45), of which some 27 kilometres – from Montepuez to Balama – were paved before work stopped.
