Flooding on the lower Umbelúzi River brought not only misfortune to riverside neighbourhoods, but also awakened a new, unusual way of being and earning money, involving, above all, women – because they are on the front line when it comes to piloting boats to cross the river.
With a little daring and a spirit of enterprise, women have thrown off prejudice and taken to the boats, laid up due to lack of activity, to cultivate their “inner breadwinner”. They decided to give themselves a new lease of life – and increase the household income.
They transport people and goods from one bank to the other – from, for example, Gimo to Bairro 7 de Setembro, and vice versa – following the submersion in Boane district of the Mazambanine drift, which previously facilitated the crossing.
“They rival, without unnecessary competition, the team coordinated by the National Public Safety Service (SENSAP) – which, incidentally, does not charge passengers for crossing the flooded area,” locals report.
