Gas exploration is at the door and national companies have high expectations. A meeting in Maputo on Tuesday organized by the commercial services of the US Embassy in Mozambique in partnership with the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) discussed opportunities, challenges and the role of the state, government, companies in the logistics sector and oil companies.
Participants recognize that there are windows of opportunity for the growth of companies, but they point out the need to prepare the country for the standards demanded by the oil and gas industry.
The private sector, in the voice of CTA Vice-President Agostinho Vuma, believes that there are great opportunities in various service sectors, so opportunities should not be seen as limited to technical sectors.
The Government pointed to the National Content Law as an important step in enabling the country to profit, with Director of Economic and Financial Studies at the Ministry of Economy and Finance Vasco Nhabinde explaining that Mozambique takes advantage of local content compared to international experiences, as it looks not only to the hydrocarbon sector but others such as agriculture, in addition to involving both domestic and foreign companies.
The US Embassy says that national companies need to be supported in order to be able to do business in the hydrocarbon sector.
“With extensive experience in oil and gas exploration, we plan to bring United States experts to help Mozambique cement its involvement in the entire process of exploring these resources.
The need to improve competitiveness is a point highlighted by one of Area 4 operators in the Rovuma basin, the American oil company Exxon Mobil.
“We have to investigate international quality standards to ensure the competitiveness of your companies, because we want customers to help us become more efficient,” the company’s representative said.
US presence in gas exploration in Mozambique is currently represented by Anadarko, the company that is exploring Area 1 of the Rovuma basin in Cabo Delgado.
Exxon Mobil, another US multinational, is preparing to explore Area 4 and is willing to recruit Mozambican labour during its operations, as it is already doing in other countries where it operates, such as Angola and Nigeria.
