The demands of some community leaders in Nampula province hit the headlines , Sala da Paz reports. According to Jornal Ikweli , community leaders recently raised concerns over allowances with Governor of Nampula Province Manuel Rodrigues at a meeting covering the districts of Nacala Porto and Nacala a Velha.
The group maintained that they had contributed favourably to the Frelimo victory in the 2019 general and provincial elections, and were in addition facing an increased cost of living.
Ikweli indicates that the current subsidies for these socio-political players vary between 250 and 700 meticais.
Another concern presented to the first governor-elect of the province of Nampula was the distribution of new uniforms, their current one having been handed out a long time ago.
“In the same way, we ask for the review of our subsidy and the acquisition of new uniforms,” the newspaper quotes the community leaders as saying.
Governor Manuel Rodrigues recognised the legitimacy of their complaints, but without offering any immediate solution.
“It is logical, and we will work to reflect and see how, depending on the reality in the country in economic and financial terms, we can overcome this problem of subsidy for our community authorities,” Rodrigues said, highlighting the financial restrictions imposed on the Mozambican state by Covid-19.
He did however acknowledge the community leaders’ substantial contribution to society.
“It is true that we must look at community authorities as making a very large contribution, especially now in the dissemination of messages for the prevention of Covid-19. They do a lot. We want to highlight their role and continue to work with the government so that they may fulfil their noble mission of passing on government messages to the entire community across Nampula province,” he said.
