After 15 days of investigation into the alleged involvement of a member of parliament in a drug trafficking case in the province of Zambézia, the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) says that no information or suspicions have come to light in the matter.
This Wednesday, the Commission held a press conference for journalists in Zambézia, but did not provide details of the investigation into the case.
The members of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry of the Assembly of the Republic looked into all the routes where drugs allegedly circulate in Zambézia province. These included Quelimane, the port of Macuse and the districts of Namacurra and Mocuba, where they inquired and interacted with various actors on the subject. Fifteen days later, the CPI says it has reached no conclusions on the matter.
“Our work will culminate with the presentation of the results, which we are still producing. Once the work is concluded, it will be up to the Standing Commission to give to the conclusions that the commission draws the treatment it deems appropriate. As we still do not have conclusions on this matter and given the nature of the process, we do not have [any] information to share at this precise moment,” the CPI’s president António Niquice said.
The newspaper ‘O País’ asked António Niquice if the CPI had verified that Zambézia was a drug corridor, to which he replied that, at the moment, the commission could go into detail about the investigation, because it was still ongoing, but “as it is already in the public domain, in Macuse a vessel was seized, which is part of the drug trafficking network, and we also know that, in Mocuba, the police seized significant amounts of methamphetamine and cannabis sativa, which is of great concern to the authorities and others”.
António Niquice made it known that the systematization of the information collected on the ground had already been completed and would be submitted to the Standing Commission of the Assembly of the Republic, which would subsequently make a public statement. He also said that all the necessary requirements were followed during the work to ascertain the truth.
This Wednesday, the CPI left Zambezia province to return to Maputo.
