Deputy Attorney General Amabélia Chuquela said Mozambique is looking to strengthen bilateral cooperation with neighbouring countries in order to combat trafficking in persons more effectively.
Speaking to Diário de Moçambique in Beira, Sofala, on September 18, Amabélia was responding to questions about trafficking and the attempted sale of Cabo Delgado women on their way to Saudi Arabia.

She explained that the attorney general was very concerned about some of the provinces of the country, especially those bordering neighbouring countries, which had from time to time registered cases of trafficking in persons, including albinos.
Chuquela said that the recent attempt to traffic women in Cabo Delgado was a clear case, and that it was imperative that international cooperation be reinforced to combat the phenomenon.
She said it was premature to comment on actual figures, but said she considered the situation was under control thanks to the attorney general’s work with child protection and anti-trafficking groups.
“We have recorded the disappearance of an albino child and are working to establish if this was a trafficking case or not,” Chuquela said.
On the Cabo Delgado case, the deputy attorney general explained that investigations were being carried out to obtain sufficient evidence to prosecute. This alleged crime was perpetrated by two Mozambicans and two Tanzanians, and so far there were three detainees.
“The discovery of the attempted trafficking is a sign that there is work still to be done. We are aware that the women have returned to their areas of origin,” she added.
