A goods train belonging to the Brazilian mining company Vale collided on Wednesday morning with a truck at an unmanned level crossing on the Sena rail line, near the town of Dondo, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, according to a report on the independent television station, STV.
The truck was loaded with sand for construction purposes. According to eye-witnesses, the truck driver did not take the elementary precaution of stopping when he came to the level crossing and checking whether any trains were approaching.
The collision caused severe damage to the truck and slight damage to the locomotive and the track. The publicly owned ports and rail company, CFM, immediately mobilized a brigade and equipment to repair the line. Traffic along the line was interrupted for about four hours.
The train consisted of two locomotives and 84 wagons. They had unloaded their cargo of coal at the port of Beira, and were returning empty to Moatize.
