The National Elections Commission (CNE) has expressed concern over political parties campaigning for the elections ahead of the official period designated for that purpose.
Speaking in Maputo yesterday (11-06), though without naming names, CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica explained that political parties were not observing the period fixed in the electoral suffrage calendar for carrying out the campaign.
“We have seen with some dissatisfaction, with some sadness, some candidates and political formations who have already gone into the campaign asking for votes, presenting their electoral manifestos to the citizens,” he said.
Cuinica warned that the transgressors “use various means, like the media. They have presented themselves to the public, they have also presented themselves through social networks. We want to reiterate that this practice constitutes an electoral offense punishable under the terms of the law”.
He stressed that the acceptance of candidacies does not mean that political parties could immediately start campaigning.
“We ask with respect for containment until the start of the electoral campaign is declared. In the meantime we ask all stakeholders to remain vigilant in relation to these practices and report them when they happen in the form of a campaign,” he said.
Cuinica insisted that “this is not the time to start asking for votes or presenting electoral manifestos. These have a set time limit, starting 45 days before the elections and ending 48 hours before voting”.
Officially, electoral campaigning starts on August 28 and ends on October 6 of this year.
