The Mozambican National Election Commission (CNE) will count on the “very strong support” of the Defence and Security Forces during the general elections on October 15, its chairperson Abdul Carimo has said.
“We will hold elections everywhere with the strong support of the Defence and Security Forces,” Abdul Carimo told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
Despite this guarantee, Carimo expressed concern over those individuals displaced from their areas of residence by armed violence in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
“It is true that we have some displaced populations in some places,” he said.
The insecurity caused by armed groups is affecting the districts of Palma, Mocimboa da Praia, Macomia, Nangade and Muidumbe.
On October 15, Mozambique will hold its the sixth general and multiparty elections, including presidential, legislative and provincial elections.
The elections will for the first time select the governors of the country’s ten provinces, ending the previous system of presidential appointments to the post.
