Mozambique: Unidentified ship immobilized off Xai-Xai beach - report
In the week just ended, the Mozambique police arrested 34 people, including 28 former workers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), better known as “Madjermanes”, for the sale and consumption of drugs.
According to authorities, the 28 former GDR workers now being held at the 8th precinct police station in the capital were consuming and selling the drug ‘soruma’. Six other individuals are being held in the 10th precinct for the consumption and sale of cocaine.
Police said they had seized 2.5 kilograms of processed ‘soruma’ and half a kilogram of seed. The arrests took place during a sweep of drug production sites and caches in Maputo. Some of the arrests allegedly involved the use of force, due to the suspects resisting arrest.
Some members of the group were discovered in 28 de Maio Park, sometimes referred to as the “Garden of the Madjermanes” because it is where the former workers in the GDR hold the meetings to pressure the government to pay them the funds to which they say they are entitled.
There are about 11,000 returned former GDR workers spread across the country. Of this group, which are reclaiming the 60 percent portion of their salary which was cashed in Mozambique, some are already dead and are represented by relatives in the fight for their rights.
The funds relate to social security, family allowance, compensation for breach of contract and default interest.
