Health authorities in Nacala-Porto, Nampula province, are screening individuals with cleft lips for corrective surgery. In just one week, 15 patients were registered for the treatment, which will take place this year.
The stomatologist at the Nacala Urban Health Centre, António Mualeite, has called on relatives of people with cleft lips to visit the facility and arrange surgery because people with the condition are stigmatised.
“We have done community awareness campaigns on stigma and run campaigns to identify people for corrective surgery, with satisfactory results,” Mualeite reported. Corrective cleft lip surgery campaigns have run twice before in the province, in Nampula city and Nacala-Porto.
People born with cleft lip (cleft palate) face immense difficulty learning to speak, eat, socialize or even smile. Many are socially rejected, with their parents unable to afford corrective surgery, which is here offered free. Nevertheless, several people identified in previous campaigns did not turn up for their surgery appointments.
