The city of Quelimane in central Mozambique has decided to remove the derelict bridge which a local ferry struck before sinking, police told Lusa on Friday.
Speaking to Lusa, Zambézia province police spokesman Miguel Cândido, said that the work began on Wednesday and should be completed within 90 days.
“It’s a metal structure less than a kilometer long built over the river about 20 years ago which corroded over time until it collapsed two years ago during the floods,” Candido said.
On Monday last week, the municipality of Quelimane decreed a three-day period of mourning for the five who died and the 12 still missing following the sinking last Saturday of a boat carrying passengers from one side of the Chicapa River to the other.
According to Quelimane municipality, ten people survived the incident.
