Twenty-two-year-old Julio Fernando Vasco lost his sight last week, victim of human organ trafficking case in Manica province.
According to Manica police spokeswoman Elsidia Filipe, the PRM has already detained a suspect in connection with the case. Speaking at a press conference in Manica yesterday, Filipe said that 28-year-old João Luís João is being held at the 1st PRM Police Station in Chimoio, capital of Manica, for thecrime.
Along with two friends still at large, João cut out one of Vasco’s eyes, believing that it contained mercury that they could sell for a good profit.
To achieve his goal, Joao invited the victim, his cousin, to go out, and got him drunk.
Two young men then appeared, who beat the victim and pulled his eyes out using their fingers. The evildoers were only able to extract one eye, the second being destroyed in the attempt. The two then made off with the one good eye.
The victim lay on the ground for some time until he recovered and screamed for help. He was taken to hospital where it was established that it was not possible to save the second eye because of the extensive damage it had sustained.
João denies any involvement in the crime, claiming that he went to his cousin’s house to invite him for a walk, something they often did together.
