During the course of his visit to Sofala, President Filipe Nyusi yesterday officially inaugurated a US$45 million Cimentos da Beira factory in Munhava, Matope. The factory is the third of its kind in the province, joining the Cimentos de Mozambique and Austral Cimentos works, both in Dondo district.
With a global production capacity of 800,000 tons of cement per year (110 tons per hour), the joint British/South African-owned plant employs more than 70 people, mostly Mozambicans.
According to Cimentos da Beira sales coordinator Eriqueta Chate, the plant’s main markets will be the central and northern regions of Mozambique, as well as Inhambane in the south, and the Vilankulo municipality in particular.
“Of the US$45 million, US$3 million was invested in the construction of an electricity substation that feeds the plant, and the rest in the purchase of equipment and building infrastructure,” Eriqueta said.
