Specialists essential for the construction of Chongoene Airport in Gaza are being held up in China by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the construction of the airport may be delayed by up to five months.
Director of the Provincial Infrastructure Service in Gaza, Alberto Matusse, told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique on Friday that the closure of air borders due to Covid-19 was preventing specialists from leaving China. but that efforts are underway to persuade the Chinese authorities to release them soon.
“There are efforts underway to create urgent conditions for the arrival of Chinese specialists, whose trip has been affected by Covid-19,” Matusse said.
The Chongoene International Airport construction project was launched by President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi on October 5, 2018. The US$75 million airport is being financed by the Chinese government.
The project, work on which was initially scheduled to last two years, includes a 1,800 metre airstrip and covers a total area of about 9,000 square metres. Matusse said that the construction of the airport buildings was 60% advanced, the runway 50%, the airport perimeter fence 60% and the concrete-laying 24%.
