Rumours of a cholera outbreak have caused the closure of health centres in the villages of Geba and Baixo Pinda in Memba district.
Health personnel as well as the local administrator had abandoned their posts for refuge outside the region, allegedly for fear of mob retribution.
Commercial establishments and many other services were closed on Friday and much of the population was also leaving the villages.
