The German KFW development bank has allocated EUR11 million for the rehabilitation and reopening of the Chiveve River Canal in Beira, with the first phase of the works due for completion by September.
Beira municipal council’s Chiveve River rehabilitation works of include the construction of an exercise space and playgrounds as well as mangroves reforestation, and anticipate the creation of large-scale infrastructure all over the area.
The EUR11 million KFW-financed contract will result in the arrival in Beira next August of a number of special sluices currently being manufactured abroad.
These sluices, or gates will help control of the passage of sea water and harmonise levels between the Chiveve River and the fishing dock and the sea, Mayor of Beira Daviz Simango told a press conference this Saturday on his return from a visit to Germany aimed at consolidating KFW support.
Simango said that work was proceeding at a satisfactory pace and that the gates would be installed by foreign technicians by next September.
The rehabilitation the Chiveve Channel would transform the image of Beira, he said.
”On the other hand we want to create a space for exercise where people can do a set routine of physical exercises. We will also move forward with a children’s park where children can enjoy themselves. We will also have the mangrove reforestation. All to ensure that this first phase of the reopening of the Chiveve river provides adjacent infrastructure,” Simango said.
One Beira official said that the municipality requires EUR20 million for the second phase of this project, which also includes the development of green infrastructure and the construction of small leisure resorts along the Chiveve river.
Two banking entities have already shown an interest in financing the second phase of the project, notably the World Bank and KFW, which will work together for the first time in the municipality, with the mayor said to have already consolidated support during his visit.
The German minister of cooperation is to visit Beira soon to come up to date with his country’s investments in the city.
