Former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano said in Maputo that President Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal’s visit to the country has opened horizons for the strengthening of bilateral relations, highlighting the Portuguese statesman’s commitment to Mozambique.
“He (Rebelo de Sousa) has a strong attachment to Mozambique because of the time he spent here. (His visit) opens horizons for closer relations with Mozambique,” Chissano told reporters after a meeting with the Portuguese head of the state.
Chissano described the meeting with Rebelo de Sousa, with former Mozambican Luisa Diogo also in attendance, as a “gathering of family and friends”.
The occasion was one of a series of meetings with former leaders and opposition politicians organised by Rebelo de Sousa to bolster his understanding of the country’s political and economic circumstances.
Rebelo de Sousa’s four-day state visit to Mozambique ended on Friday. It coincided with the announcement on Wednesday of the suspension of disbursements from the G14 state budget donor group, currently chaired by Portugal, following the revelation of undisclosed debts in the public accounts.
