Inhassunge district is one those places where severe poverty shows its face.
Chinese company Africa Greet Wall Mining, which mines heavy sands in the district, has already disbursed more than US$1.5 million extending the local electricity grid 17 kilometres to the villages of Cherimane and Olinda, benefiting some 17,000 inhabitants..
Now, it has decided to disburse 13 million meticais [around US$174 thousand, at current exchange rates] to rehabilitate the five kilometre section of road between the villages of Chirimane and Boane, a stretch that also allows the population access to the villages of Muaialo and Cassimbue.
The situation is more pressing in the rainy season, when the road is often cut, preventing communication between the localities.
“Our company wants to do a lot more in this district as part of our social responsibility programme. We are going to come back on another day and talk about your needs so that we can do something to help,” Africa Greet Wall Mining representative Mustakima Aly said, after the first stone was laid.
The district permanent secretary, Abdul Libir, acknowledges the support the Chinese company’s intervention will afford the population and the district government.
“We would like to appeal to the population to offer their maximum support to the company and ensure there is no obstacle presented to the execution of the works, which will last for about four months,” Abdul Libir said.
The permanent secretary of Inhassunge district asked the company to see if it might be possible at some stage to rehabilitate all 16 kilometres of road from Boane passing through the junction with the regional Recamba-Abreus Road 320 all the way to the Massasse river and crossing to Olinda Island.
