Chinese investors are interested in reactivating the Port of lnhambane in the capital of the province of the same name in southern Mozambique, the local governor has announced.
“There are ongoing contacts” between Chinese businesspeople and national entities linked to the sector, Daniel Chapo said on Wednesday at the Maputo International Fair FACIM, quoted by Noticias newspaper.
One of the main obstacles to investment is the silting up of the infrastructure, which would requires “major intervention,” he explained.
Chinese interest was first aroused at an investor conference held in Incheon, South Korea, in 2017.
The provincial capital of Inhambane, on the Indian Ocean coast and 500 kilometres north of Maputo, is one of the main tourist centres in southern Mozambique, thanks to its beaches and hotel facilities.
