The Communist Party of China (CPC) is to donate rice valued at eight million US dollars to support victims of natural disasters in Mozambique.
The donation was announced by Guo Jinlong of the CPC Political Bureau following a meeting on Monday in Maputo with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.
According to the United Nations World Food Programme, over 1.4 million people in the south and centre of the country are “acutely food insecure and in need of food assistance” due to last year’s severe drought. The humanitarian situation was worsened in February when cyclone Dineo hit the southern province of Inhambane. It is estimated that seven people died during the cyclone, 51 injured, and over half a million affected in a dozen Inhambane districts.
Guo Jinlong explained that the CPC has been following these developments and was donating the rice, in the name of the Chinese government, to alleviate the suffering of the affected population.
He added that his visit aims to promote bilateral cooperation with the ruling party Frelimo and to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendship that exists between the two countries.
Expressing confidence in Mozambique’s future, Guo Jinlong stressed the continuing importance placed by the Chinese leadership on their partnership to promote the industrialisation of the country. In particular, he stated that China will continue to expand cooperation with Mozambique in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure, and human resources. He explained that this is in line with the goals set out in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) which was held in Johannesburg in South Africa in 2015.
