China is to finance the reconstruction of Beira fishing port in Sofala province at a cost of about US$ 120 million. The project, which will take about a year to complete, will expand fish handling capacity from the current 30,000 to about 70,000 tonnes.
Speaking yesterday at the laying of the first stone, the Minister for the Marine, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Agostinho Mondlane, said that Beira would be able to handle sixteen vessels simultaneously, double its current capacity.
Storage and fish processing capacity will also be increased.
Economic and commercial attache at the Chinese embassy in Mozambique, Wing Lee Pei, said that China would continue to fund social projects within the framework of bilateral cooperation.
