China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) workers building the Maputo Ring Road and the Maputo-Katembe Bridge, went back on strike yesterday morning in protest against low wages and demanding the 13th month pay cheque.
The strike involves locksmiths, bricklayers, machinists, drivers and mechanics at company’s main depot in Marracuene.
Also forming part of the list of claims are demands for the payment of holiday allowances, for the observance of health and safety at work regulations, and for industrial accident insurance and medical assistance.
The non-payment of overtime and the absence of written employment contracts for some of the workers are also causing discontent.
According to Luis Cossa, one of the CBRC workers, the biggest worries are the lack of employment contracts, which has given rise to unfair dismissals, non-payment of overtime and the 13th month salary.
“We want to see our rights restored. Here at CBRC, workers are not respected and the employers think that they have the right to dismiss without just cause. Most seriously, we have to strike just to get our salary. We want workers who are entitled to it to get the 13th salary cheque by the 10th of this month at the latest,” he explained.
A team from the General Labor Inspectorate of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (MITESS) went to the site early today to speak to managers and find a way out of the impasse.
Mediator Fernão Wane told Notícias that there are differences between the parties, because workers are demand payment of the 13th month salary by the 10th of the current, while management says that it can only pay it next January.
