The Chinese government plans to help Mozambique build a new central hospital in Maputo, replacing the current HCM, which is more than 100 years old, the health unit announces in its latest newsletter.
The investment was discussed during a visit by the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, Su Jian, to the HCM in November.
“We are interested in supporting the construction of a new hospital,” the diplomat said at the time, quoted in the bulletin, which has been seen by Lusa.
According to Ambassador Su Jian, China has already provided support to the health sector in Mozambique through the construction and improvement of heath infrastructure in the country.
One year ago, a new paediatric block, built and equipped with support from China, went into operation at Beira Central Hospital.
Health, education and agriculture are “the priority areas of China’s international cooperation with the African continent for the next few years,” he pointed out.
The situation of care in the main health unit of the Mozambican capital “is not good and we would like to have a modern hospital here in Mozambique that also offers Chinese medicine,” National Director of Medical Assistance at the Ministry of Health Hussen Ice has said.
The parties agreed to “immediately begin preparing the necessary conditions” so that “memoranda of understanding” to get the project under way can be signed in the near future, he concluded.
China has partnered with Mozambique to build and finance some of the country’s most recent major public projects, such as the bridge over Maputo Bay and its associated road network, and the Xai-Xai International Airport, currently under construction.
Entities from Mozambique and China signed eight Memoranda of Understanding in infrastructure, industry, telecommunications, agriculture and financial services in Beijing during a recent business forum held in parallel with the third edition of the China Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC).
