A six-year-old boy has been found dead and with some of his organs missing in a drainage ditch in the city of Beira, Sofala province, central Mozambique, it was reported this Monday.
His mother told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique that her son had been “gutted”, his tongue cut out, and one of his legs was missing.
“That was no longer my child; he had been butchered,” she declared.
Two persons suspected of involvement are in detention.
Radio Mozambique reported claims that “witchcraft” was probably behind the child’s death and organ harvesting, and residents of the Munhava neighbourhood, where the incident took place, vandalized the home of one of the two suspects in the minor’s murder.
Crimes of this type occur repeatedly in Mozambique. Human organs extracted from victims are allegedly used in macabre rituals by healers supposedly ‘treating’ people seeking wealth, good fortune, or other ends.
