A child has been living chained up by his uncles for ten years in Chiúta, Tete province.
The unusual case was reported to the police by a Catholic missionary, who heard the cries of a child coming from inside a residence.
When they realized that someone had filed a complaint, the uncles of the victim fled. Police are now in pursuit of them for crimes of unlawful imprisonment and violation of the rights of the child.
A spokesman for the Tete provincial prosecutor’s office said the motives behind the chaining of the child were not known, since he did not exhibit any kind of mental or physical problem.
This is the first case of private imprisonment registered in Tete this year.
