Mozambique: Three dead bodies found in Macomia district - Lusa

A child has died in an accident on mining premises belonging to Vale Mozambique in the Liberdade neighbourhood of Moatize in central Tete province.
The accident took place when Chapanga José Cupassar and two friends entered the mining concession area driven by curiosity about a truck spreading water in order to reduce the pollution resulting from mining activity. Shortly afterwards a giant truck known as an ‘off-the -roader’ came by, inadvertently covering the victim with sand.
The two unharmed children fled the scene to inform their parents of what happened, who in turn rushed to the scene to tell the drivers of the two trucks. They however ignored their calls to mount a rescue operation.
“The attitude of the two drivers sealed the child’s fate,” said one member of the victim’s family. Those who flocked to the site to try to save the child believe that, had the driver of the truck and his colleague taken their calls for help seriously, the worst might have been avoided.
“When we reached the spot where the child was buried, we shouted for them to dig with the scoop, but they ignored us, thinking maybe that it was a joke. We tried digging with hoes, but without success. By the time they realised the seriousness of the situation, it was too late,” the witness said.
The giant truck was then vandalised by the victim’s neighbours, allegedly because of the Vale employees’ lack of cooperation. A private security firm hired by the mining company shot rubber bullets into the air to disperse the crowd.
