The livestock sector in Chibuto district, Gaza province, remains on high alert following an outbreak of theileriosis disease which has killed over three hundred and fifty head of cattle already this year.
The disease is caused by a tick and is thought to arise from the cohabitation of cattle and buffalo in close proximity.
The director of the District Services of Economic Activities in Chibuto, Miracle Simbine, told Radio Mozambique that breeders moving animals without observing disease control measures also contributed to the spread of theileriosis.
A dipping campaign is being implemented at all the large livestock farms in that part of Gaza to curb the outbreak.
What is theileriosis?
