Two cheques with a total value of 1.9 million meticais have disappeared from the premises of the Mocuba Municipal Council. The first cheque is for one million meticais and the other for nine hundred thousand metical.
An amount corresponding to one of the cheques has already been withdrawn from the bank.
This mysterious disappearance is generating controversy over the governance of the mayor of Mocuba, Beatriz Gulamo. The cheques, bearing a signature similar to that of the mayor, disappeared in August of this year.
“I confirm the disappearance of the two cheques. Investigations into how they disappeared are still under way. We will find out in the end,” the mayoress says.
Of the two cheques in question, for one million meticais, was cashed in Nacala without the bank querying the city council. The second cheque could not be cashed due to insufficient funds. A robbery case has already been opened in the District Attorney’s Office of Mocuba.
Artur Nirouca, the president of Mocuba Municipal Assembly, says he deplores the disappearance of the two cheques, and is appealing to the organs of justice for a speedy resolution to the case.
