The drinking water distribution network in the province of Tete is being affected by chemical substances that could impact some of the 268,000 families in the cities of Tete and Moatize.
The chemicals – nitrogen oxide and hydroxide – are silting up the pipes running from the catchment centre in the Nhartanda valley via the distribution centre to consumers.
The problem may reduce the water pressure in the Mateus Sansão Mutemba, Samora Machel, Báruè, Filipe Samuel Magaia, Josina Machel and Francisco Manyanga neighbourhoods over the coming days.
This itself may be further aggravated by the reduction of the water level in the Nhartanda and Revúbuè aquifer, preventing the implementation of a project to open new boreholes in case the network expansion is necessary.
The FIPAG regional director said that the demographic explosion of Tete and Moatize cities meant that it was not possible to invest in underground water systems.
