The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, laid the foundations for Mozambique’s economic transformation over the next 50 years, inviting Mozambican youth to take on the challenge.
The event took place at the conference “Economic Independence: 50 Years of Freedom, 50 Years of Opportunities”, which took place today (19) in Maputo, and was held under the motto “Mozambique 50 years later: Time for Youth to Transform Freedom into Prosperity”.
“Your role is essential for the economic transformation we seek. We want to say that you are not only beneficiaries of public policies, but strategic actors of change for the future of our Mozambique,” he said.
As the first basis for achieving economic liberation, Chapo recommends that young people learn to draw on the experience of their elders, since they have accumulated vast skills, which opens up space for young people to change in the next 50 years.
“What must be done so that we have the next 50 years better than the 50 years we are going to celebrate,” he said.
In the second, the statesman calls on young people to invest in entrepreneurship and take on the mission of generating jobs for other young people. Chapo defines an entrepreneur as someone who drives local value chains and proves that it is possible to do things differently.
As a third basis, Chapo points out the need for young people not to wait for ideal conditions because there will never be a completely ideal environment. “We all have to fight together, in permanent dialogues, public sector, private sector, to create a good environment.”
“Fourth basis: we need innovation, value addition and intelligent import substitution must be its compass, and we as public sector, it is our responsibility to listen to the private sector,” he said. Chapo added that it is necessary to undertake local production, transform raw materials and compete in the world intelligently, with imported products. Finally, the fifth and sixth bases, according to Chapo, consist of including all citizens in the processes of economic independence, particularly young entrepreneurs. “No one should be excluded from this boat. It must be sustainable and supportive.” Therefore, he calls on young people to participate in the inclusive national dialogue. “Bring your voice, bring your ideas. Mozambique’s economic future is also built on its interventions. Let us not waste this historic opportunity that we have here.”
Speaking about the conference’s motto, the Head of State said that it is an invitation to the youth to recognize that economic independence will not be an automatic result of the passage of time, but rather the result of the youth’s capacity to intervene in the economy.
“Whether it is the public or private sector,” stated the President, “together we have to do something to ensure that results appear, in the mobilization of national or foreign investments, in planning, in leadership and in national cohesion, especially in holding conferences of this kind, where we have to debate everything that hinders our economic growth, our economic development, as a people.”
Chapo also wants to see the youth engaged in a global movement that capitalizes on everyone’s contribution, giving economic content to the country’s sovereignty.
The event was attended by members of the government, Secretaries of State for Youth and Sports, and Fisheries, members of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs, business associations, diplomatic corps accredited in Mozambique and other guests.
