Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has invited African businesspeople, especially those from Mozambique and Rwanda, to set up partnerships in order to support the logistics involved in the construction of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project being developed by a consortium led by the French oil and gas company, TotalEnergies.
The LNG project is budgeted at around 20 billion dollars. Its construction was frozen in 2021 following a major attack by Islamist terrorists against Palma town, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Chapo, speaking on Thursday at the Kigali Business Roundtable, the project requires close cooperation across the entire supply chain, including agriculture, energy, logistics and digitalization.
“We invite you all to consider Mozambique as your strategic partner in Southern Africa”, he said. “We will build joint ventures, explore industrial parks, exchange experiences in city management, and expand our cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, energy, logistics, services, and digitalization”.
Chapo acknowledged the complexity of the project and the management of the investment value “but if we don’t prepare ourselves as Africans, these financial resources could all return to their origin.”
He explained that it is a major logistical exercise to provide, for example, food for about 20,000 people who will work during the implementation phase of these projects.
“We need to prepare ourselves so that we can also do our part in providing logistics, transport, and the supply of goods and services to these megaprojects”, he added.
“I would like to say to my Rwandan brothers and businesspeople here, and to our Mozambican brothers, that we are working day and night, 24 hours a day, to see if we can resume the projects that were suspended in the Rovuma Basin because of terrorism”, said Chapo.
