Mozambican President Daniel Chapo believes that his meeting, on Sunday night, with the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane was an important step towards stabilizing the country through discussion of ideas.
According to Chapo, who was speaking to reporters on Wednesday, when closing his two-day working visit to the northern province of Niassa, discussion of ideas is the only way to move the country’s development forward.
“We think it was a good meeting, because it will allow us to stabilize the country, politically, socially and economically, so that we can continue to work, all of us, as Mozambicans”, he said.
Chapo believes that, if each of the candidates has campaigned to become President, this means that the country has various thoughts on how to bring about development and prosperity.
“It means that they have ideas, and it’s important that we gather these ideas from all the candidates and all the parties, not just in parliament, but even involving the extra-parliamentary parties. All Mozambicans will take part in this inclusive dialogue, so that we can develop the country”, he said.
Mondlane and Chapo, during the meeting, also agreed to end violence in order to pave the way for future meetings in the context of the “Political Commitment for an Inclusive National Dialogue”, the document which was signed by Chapo and nine political parties on 5 March. Chapo has asked the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, to give this document the force of law as quickly as possible.
