Celso Correia reaffirms: Around 90% of Mozambican population has food security – Notícias

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Celso Correia, reiterated yesterday, in Parliament, that at least 90 percent of the Mozambican population is food secure, Notícias reports.

According to Minister Correia, this percentage is of Mozambicans who have access to safe food, who manage to meet their minimum daily caloric needs and, therefore, are already able to have [or may have] three meals a day.

“In other words, they are able to have three meals a day, given that they are able to gather and consume food daily and ingest the minimum calories necessary to maintain themselves and carry out their daily activities”, reaffirmed Correia.

In his explanation, the minister pointed out that it is necessary to ensure stable access to food. “And this is where our main challenge lies, because 40 percent of our population has minimum consumption and is still vulnerable – they live in uncertainty despite managing to have that minimum consumption. It is necessary to ensure sustainability or stability – access to food in a stable and safe way 365 days a year”, he said.

O Ministro de Agricultura e Desenvolvimento Rural, Celso Correia, reiterou ontem, no Parlamento, que pelo menos 90 por cento da população moçambicana tem segurança alimentar.

Segundo sua explicação, esta percentagem é de moçambicanos que têm acesso a alimentos seguros, que conseguem suprir as suas necessidades calóricas mínimas diárias e, por isso, já conseguem [ou podem] ter três refeições por dia.

“Dito de outro modo, estes têm condições de ter as três refeições por dia, pois conseguem reunir e consumir alimentos diariamente e ingerir as calorias mínimas necessárias para conseguirem manter-se e exercer as suas actividades quotidianas”, reafirmou Correia.

Na sua explanação, o ministro apontou, que na ocasião, teria sido avançado que era necessário assegurar a estabilidade de acesso aos alimentos. “E aqui é onde está o nosso principal desafio porque 40 por cento da nossa população tem consumo mínimo e ainda é vulnerável – vive na incerteza apesar de conseguir ter esse consumo mínimo. É preciso assegurar a sustentabilidade ou estabilidade – acesso aos alimentos de uma forma estável e segura durante 365 dias por ano”, avançou.
