The nine Mozambicans of the Mandela Washington Fellowship Cohort 2024
The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique is proud to celebrate ten years of the Mandela Washington Fellowship’s success. This year’s cohort of nine Fellows represent seven distinct provinces across Mozambique, reflecting the country’s rich diversity. This representation not only highlights the Fellowship’s commitment to inclusivity but also emphasizes the variety of perspectives and experiences these participants bring from across the nation. Currently, these young Mozambican leaders are in the United States, engaging in various activities related to their respective program tracks: Leadership in Civic Engagement, Business and Public Management.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and local community engagement. YALI, the U.S. government’s signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders, supports young Africans as they spur economic growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. Since its inception in 2014, nearly 6,500 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa have participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship. 91% of Alumni report that participating in the Mandela Washington Fellowship motivated them to take on a leadership role in their community.
This year’s cohort of Fellows from Mozambique are part of a group of 700 Mandela Washington Fellows hosted at 28 educational institutions across the United States. Fellows were selected from a pool of over 50,000 applications submitted across the continent. The following leaders are participating in the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship:
After the Leadership Institutes in the United States this summer, the Fellows will attend the Mandela Washington Fellowship Summit, which begins on July 29 in Washington, D.C. There, they will have the opportunity to network and participate in panel discussions with other Fellows and American leaders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors. After the Summit, up to 100 competitively selected Fellows will have four weeks of professional development experience with American NGOs, private companies, and government agencies.
