A rabies vaccination campaign aimed at more than 14,000 dogs and cats in Maputo took off this Monday, with the full support of the capital’s Chamaculo B residents.
Such could however not be universally said of their pets, Miramar reports. Mrs. Celeste’s cat, for example, succeeded in opening a hole in its carrying bag only metres from the vaccination team, and made off at speed.
Stronger bags must therefore play a vital part in any fight against rabies.
This is the first campaign to take place in the ‘neighbourhoods’, and comes at a time when stray animals are a matter of increasing concern.
Figures reflect an increase in dog bites in 2018, with 675 in Maputo city alone. This year’s figures will be much higher – 700 incidents were registered in the first quarter alone.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety intends to vaccinate 14,500 dogs and cats during the three-week campaign.
At the same time, Maputo Municipal Council is busy rounding up stray dogs. Rabies is transmitted via the saliva of infected animals, and a bite or scratch can prove fatal.
