On Monday, the Carlos Morgado Foundation (FCM) delivered 50 school desks rehabilitated with funding from Gigawatt Moçambique SA to the Matola Secondary School in Maputo province.
Since the school teaches in three shifts and each room has a capacity of 50 students, these school desks will take 150 students off the ground. The desks and chairs are part of a first phase batch of 100 that FCM is set to rehabilitate.
The school has around 1,700 desk and chair frames with no tops and seats. After researching the most accessible materials and techniques, FCM developed a prototype using available and affordable pallet wood.
According to the Foundation’s Azarias Mpfumo, the institution intends to demonstrate alternative ways of rehabilitating school desks and raise the motivation of the students in the school. “The new desks will contribute to students marks in a way, since, no longer sitting on the floor, they will have additional motivation,” Azarias says.
Mpfumo also said that FCM intends to recover more, and “if possible, all the desks, so that the school is fully equipped for all students to the minimum necessary conditions”.
The Carlos Morgado Foundation is hoping to involve the students, parents and caregivers in the school desk rehabilitation project. According to Mpfumo, inclusion will help students to value their school equipment.
