Over the last 20 years, the Port of Maputo has invested around US$700 million in automating its operations, with a view to ensuring transparency and reliability of the services both within the country and in the SADC region more generally.
In the period under review, the volume of cargo handled rose from five million tonnes in 2003 to 26.7 million in 2022, a growth of more than 500%, said Communication and Image manager at the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), Soraya Abdula.
Abdula was speaking about the challenges and advances registered at the Port of Maputo over the last 20 years on Radio Mozambique’s Café da Manhã programme this Monday (16-04).
She further noted that the Port of Maputo had over the last two decades enjoyed a favourable place within the SADC region, and also discoursed on the Maputo Port Master Plan currently underway.
The MPDC spokesperson revealed that the Port of Maputo anticipates handling around 30 million tons of various cargo this year.
