About 70 radiated tortoises,were seized in the Mozambique Island district of Nampula province this Monday at the residence of a 66-year-old Portuguese citizen, J. Correia, Miramar reports.
Astrochelys radiata ” “the star tortoise radiating light” is a species in danger of extinction in te wild and native to and most abundant in southern Madagascar but can also be found in the rest of the island, and has been introduced to Réunion and Mauritius.
The se tortoises are of high commercial value, Miramar adds.
Miramar adds that it “has learned that the Portuguese citizen has been breeding these tortoises in his home for 16 years as well as managing the legalisation process and then selling them”.
Numbering an estimated 12 million as recently as 2005, Madagascar’s Radiated Tortoise has experienced a drastic decline, and is currently listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with possible extinction in the wild projected within 20 years.
