The President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, today urged that the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) should be more at the service of people and citizens, and not just a forum for state entities.
“Within the framework of the CPLP, we have to work together to make this community more a community of peoples and citizens than of states,” the Cape Verdean head of state said In Maputo after meeting his Mozambican counterpart Filipe Nyusi, who was sworn in for a second presidential term this Wednesday.
The Cape Verdean president, who holds the rotating presidency of the CPLP, said that the deepening of ties between the member state of the Lusophone organization also involved closer ties between the peoples.
Cape Verde, he continued, intended to identify areas of cooperation with Mozambique, so that ties in the diplomatic arena would translate into practical results for the citizens of both countries.
“We talked about the need to strengthen our bilateral relationship, and for that we will soon set a date for a state visit to Mozambique,” Jorge Carlos Fonseca added.
Tourism, transport, agriculture, sport and renewable energy were areas in which the two countries could cooperate, he said.
The CPLP consists of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste.
