Cannabis leads the list of drugs seized by Mozambican authorities over the past five years, according to the latest annual report of the country’s Central Office for Drug Prevention and Control.
The cannabis plant “occupies the first place” with a total of 27 tons seized, followed by hashish, the same product in its resinous form, with five tons, according to the document cited by the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM).
Other seizures in the same period include 172 pounds of ephedrine, 98 pounds of cocaine and five pounds of heroin.
“The volume of seizures of these psychoactive substances is in line with the current capacities of the authorities, who have been very active in the fight against drug trafficking, despite difficulties of various kinds,” the report says.
As elsewhere in the world, Mozambican cannabis growers cultivate the drug among legal crops, then transport it covertly to large urban centers.
According to the document, more than half the patients who seek treatment for drug addiction from psychiatric and mental health services are between 26 and 30 years old.
