Mozambique: "I don't feel safe" - MC Trufafá discharged from hospital | Watch
The Canadian High Commissioner to Mozambique, Shawn Barber, toured the Kapise refugee camp yesterday in the Mwanza District of southern Malawi. The High Commissioner was hosted by the Country Director for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Monique Ekoko.
Kapise Camp is home to approximately 10,000 people most of whom are Mozambicans who have fled from fighting in Tete provimce over the past several months.
“I talked to many of the refugees and most told me they fled Tete because they believed their lives were in danger. Many reported indiscriminate acts of violence.”
UNHCR is scheduled to begin relocating the refugees to a proper camp at Luwani today.
High Commissioner Barber praised UNHCR and other NGOs such as Medecins Sans Frontiere (MSF) and the World Food Program (WFP) for the work they are doing.
“UNHCR, WFP, MSF and others are doing a terrific job for these refugees. Ultimately, these people want to go home. Canada once again joins others and calls on the Government of Mozambique and RENAMO to put an end to the violence so the refugees can go back to their homes in Mozambique”
