Mozambique: New general secretary for Frelimo
O País / Shawn Barber and Filipe Nyusi
Canada’s High Commissioner Shawn Barber, head of Canadian diplomacy in Mozambique for the last three years, bade President Filipe Nyusi goodbye on Friday at the end of his tour of duty.
Speaking to the press after his final meeting with the president, Barber said he considered the country’s economic situation, characterised by exchange rate pressure and the political and military tension, critical.
The problems are serious, he said, highlighting the devaluation of the metical as a major difficulty for private companies.
Barber said he was leaving the country with the hope that the president and the leader of Renamo would reach an understanding which would put an end to the ongoing armed clashes, and that cooperation partners wanted to continue to help Mozambique solve problems in the health, education and private sectors.
