A campaign has been launched in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula to operate on women suffering from obstetric fistula.
An obstetric fistula is a severe medical condition in which a hole develops between the vagina and either the rectum or bladder as a result of childbirth.
In an interview with AIM, the coordinator of the national programme to combat obstetric fistula, Armando de Melo, explained that 52 women will undergo surgery at Nampula Central Hospital during the week. Most of the women are from Nampula province, although a few are from the central province of Zambezia. He added that 28 operations have already taken place in just four days. Armando de Melo added that operations have also taken place in the central hospitals of Maputo and Beira. There has also been a small-scale project in the district of Gurue, in Zambezia province.
He revealed that the provinces where fistulas are most common are Nampula and Niassa (in the north of the country), Zambezia, Tete and Manica (in the centre), and Inhambane (in the south).
