Portuguese pianist João Vasco and renowned Brazilian actor Alexandre Borges will present their event ‘Poema Bar’ on Thursday in Maputo, a performance that combines texts by Fernando Pessoa and Vinícius de Moraes, the Brazilian Embassy in Mozambique announces.
Alexandre Borges will recite verses by the two poets, accompanied by pianist João Vasco, who will also interpret some classics from the popular music of both countries.
Both actor and pianist bring a new perspective to the work of both Vinicius and Pessoa, two poets who, “despite having lived in different countries and times, translate into verse a broadly similarr portrait of Portuguese and Brazilian culture”, a programme note from the Portuguese embassy reads.
In Maputo, ‘Poema Bar’, which has the support of the Portuguese Cultural Center and the Cultural Center Brazil-Mozambique, will have as backdrop the Grand Hall of the Municipal Council, located in the centre of the Mozambican capital.
This is the first time since ‘Poema Bar”s inception in 2011 that the initiative has come to Mozambique, after having toured several countries and having been seen, according to the organizers, by more than 17,000 people.
Alexandre Borges joined the theater group ,Boi Voador’, directed by Ulysses Cruz, in 1985, and made his debut on stage in Jorge Amado’s piece ‘Velhos Marinheiros’ [‘Old Sailors’]. Between 1985 and 1989, he acted with the group in pieces such as ‘Corpo de Baile’, by Guimarães Rosa, and ‘Pantaleão e as Visitadoras’, by Mario Vargas Llosa. His first film role came in a short film called ,Paixao Cigana, [,Gypsy Passion,] in 1991.
His television career began in 1993 as the protagonist of Guerra sem Fim, by the now-defunct Network Manchete. A year later, he appeared in the TV mini-series Incident in Antares, on TV GLOBO. Then, in 1995, he starred in ‘Engraçadinha… Seus Amores e Seus Pecados’ [The Funny One … Her Loves and Her Sins]. He soon became one of the popular actors on TV GLOBO and one of the best-recognized by the Brazilian public. He co-conceived the show ‘Poema Bar’ with the Portuguese pianist João Vasco.
João Vasco graduated from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisbon and holds a Master’s Degree in Music Arts from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is now a piano teacher at the School of Music of the National Conservatory of Lisbon and divides his time between teaching and the stage. He has worked in Spain, France, Germany, Ireland and Brazil, and in Portugal theatres such as CCB, Gulbenkian, Culturgest and the Teatro D. Maria. He founded the ‘O Guardador de Canções’ [The Keeper of Songs’] project (CCB, ‘Dias da Musica’ 2010 to 2013) with the pianist José Brandão, and is particularly committed to the dissemination of Portuguese music and song. In October 2010 he launched a CD called ‘Além Fado’ [Beyond Fado], a compilation of fados arranged for solo piano by composers of jazz and classical music such as Mário Laginha, Vasco Mendonça, João Madureira, among others.
