The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric plant (HCB) in central Mozambique reduced power supply by 18 percent following a generator failure, according to a company statement sent to Lusa.
The breakdown, caused by the rupture of insulation material, happened on 3 December. The technical team the company has deployed to the site will need at least 70 days to effect repairs.
HCB is majority owned by the Mozambican state, with 85 percent, after reversion agreement signed in 2007 with the Portuguese state, which until then controlled the dam. Located in Tete province, central Mozambique, HCB was started in February 1970 and started operating in 1977.
In addition to supplying Mozambique, the HCB supplies electricity to several countries in southern Africa.
The Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi River is the largest in southern Africa.
