The president of Cabo Verde’s Institute of Management, Quality and Intellectual Property (IGQPI) advocated on Tuesday innovation and acceleration of scientific and technological development through the promotion of intellectual property rights.
Ana Paula Spencer explained that IGQPI intends to work “with national partner institutions of the science, technology and innovation ecosystem” and other regional and international partners “to encourage innovation, accelerate scientific and technological development through the strategic use of intellectual property rights” namely through the creation of support centres.
Spencer was speaking at the opening of a seminar being held in Praia on access to technology for innovation and the creation of Technology and Innovation Support Centres (CATI), organised by the institution and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
These CATIs will be implemented in universities, research and development institutions, and technology parks, among other national institutions, to provide access to high-quality technological information and related services, helping them explore their innovative potential and create, protect and manage their intellectual property rights.
The IGQPI president explained that this seminar aims to promote the use of intellectual property rights and inform people about the next steps for its realisation in the country.
“It is held in the context of the implementation of the guidelines of the intellectual property policy letter approved by the government in 2022 and is part of its strategic axis that guides the implementation of intellectual property rights in the programmes and priority sectors of development, more specifically in what concerns science, technology and innovation,” she pointed out.
According to the official, these will be two days of “intense sharing”, where the WIPO team of experts will ensure presentation sessions of issues and practical solutions, tools and services. He added that the roadmap for its implementation in Cabo Verde in entities and institutions would be presented.
For the head of WIPO’s innovation and technology support division, Elangi Botoy Ituku, the objective of this seminar is to teach participants how to find solutions and how to use them to promote innovation, reduce poverty and improve living conditions.
“We will also look at the database of WIPO trademarks to promote business, the United Nations scientific publishing platforms. So there will be a theoretical session and a practical session. We believe that if the people of this country continue to give practical training, then the face of the country will certainly be transformed because the aim of the CATI programme is to train the hands of the nations that are members of WIPO,” Ituku stressed.
