Cabo Verde in 2021 had a resident population of 491,233 people, practically the same as in 2010, according to definitive data from the 5th General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-2021) announced on Monday by the national statistics institute, INE.
Overall, according to the presentation made today in Praia by INE, the “definitive results” of the RGPH-2021 state that 150,206 buildings, 201,348 dwellings, 147,984 households and 505,044 individuals were registered.
“Of the census population, 491,233 were residents, 13,504 were visitors, 104 were homeless and 203 were moored on ships in the country’s ports,” states the same information from INE.
The RGPH-2021 in Cabo Verde, the largest statistical operation in the archipelago, involving around 2,000 professionals, took place in the field, with data collection entirely in digital format, from 16 June to 7 July.
In August, in the presentation of the then provisional data, INE said that 483,628 inhabitants had been registered in the operation, which would be a reduction of 1.6 percent compared to the census conducted in 2010 and would also count more men than women.
In the presentation made today by INE, with the final figures, it was noted that the resident Cape Verdean population – 29.6 percent of the total living in Praia, the country’s capital – at the time of the census, overall, of 246,363 men and 244,870 women.
The census carried out by INE in 2021 said that 65.1 percent of the population was aged between 15 and 64, 6.7 percent over 65 and 28.2 percent under 14.
Since independence, Cabo Verde has conducted four censuses in 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010. In the previous one, in 2010, the resident population of the archipelago was 491,875 people, 117,289 households, as well as 114,297 buildings and 141,761 dwellings.
This fifth General Census of Population and Housing should have taken place in 2020, but it was postponed to the following year, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
To carry out this operation, INE launched a tender to recruit 1,625 census agents in the archipelago, but the operation involved overall about 2,000 workers.
According to INE, it is planned to release 40 publications, comprising 24 statistical volumes, raw data, and 16 volumes of analysis on various topics and thematic studies, based on this census operation.
The operation is estimated to cost around 700 million escudos (6.3 million euros), financed, in addition to the government, by Luxembourg Cooperation, the European Union, the United Nations Joint Office and Spanish Cooperation.
